Since 1958, Americans have celebrated the rule of law with an annual event called Law Day. Bar Assocations across the country design programs to help the public further their study of our great legal system. This year’s theme, “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All” falls on the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Five decades later, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
This year’s theme presents a great opportunity to explore civil rights and human rights in America. The legacy of the Civil Rights Movement can be seen in the strides that have been made against discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, disability and sexual orientation.
